Dredging the water channels in Gei wai #23
The silt from the bottom of the channels in gei wai #23 has not been dredged for a long time, even before WWF Hong Kong took over management of the pond in 1995. As a result, the channels have gradually become shallower allowing reeds to invade thus reducing the area of open water available to waterbirds. This can be seen in Figure 1 below (1984 vs 2007).
In order to maintain the area of open water, the outer perimeter channel and interior cross-channels will be dredged between late August and October 2007 (Figure 2). To provide better foraging edge areas for herons and bitterns, small bays will also be created along three of the interior cross-channels.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause over the coming months. For more information, please contact either Lew Young, Janet Lee or Bena Smith (Tel 2471-6306).

The dredging work has now been successfully completed (31 October 2007) and the gei wai is back to its normal operation.
Sorry if this caused any inconvenience over the last few months, but the work was necessary to restore the gei wai so that it continues to support wetland wildlife.
