This Black-naped fledgeling was training its wings at the south Tern Island last Saturday. All the Roseates were gone, leaving about 30 Black-napeds and 10 Bridles at the colony.
Still struggling with its wings, the fledgeling drifted further and further from the island after a few failed attempts to land. Suddenly an adult (its mother?) flew out in its direction as if trying to help. It was followed by over ten birds more. The flock did not return - did we witness the final departure after breeding?
Hope they do well and come back next year.
