great photos owen!!really like your Falconet photos!!but the Eurasian Nuthatch here might be a Chestnut-Vented Nuthatch. Author: John Holmes Time: 6/09/2007 07:27 Subject: Photos from Jiangxi
Hi Owen,
Great photos, as usual. There are lots of interesting birds in Jiangxi ! However, I think your "Rosy Pipit" is an Olive-backed Pipit, and the "lain Flowerpecker" bill is too long, it should be a female sunbird of some kind.
The Pied Falconet is my favourite pic, too. You must have been very close !

Thanks Matthew,
Sorry for my poor quality of the nuthatches photo. After checking the book seems Wuyishan is not under the distribution of Chestnut-vented Nuthatch, Please could you help clarify for me ?
John,
Been asking Mr Lin many times (he said seldom to see olive-backed up there) and we check the photo detail also which this olive-backed look pipit got no white patch on the ear so we think this is a rosy. But no worry I'm sure I got a rosy in this trip :

Wow Owen !
Great picture of Pied Falconet 白腿小隼 !!!
How close were you to the lovely bird ?
I was in Jiangxi Wuyuan last May 2006, I saw it from a distant view via a 85FL spotting scope.

Thanks Jimmy,
For me almost can't focus (reach min focus range) and my friend hv to step back a few feet to focus. Around 15-18 feet to us.

one more shot of the "rosy pipit" with a diff angle.
The pipits are certainly Rosy, not Olive-backed. The characteristic pale spot below the rear end of the supercilium is absent, indicating it is not Olive-backed. Overall, these pipits are too contrasting on the upperparts, and the olive fringes to the primaries are too strong.
Further, there is the date. In late August Olive-backed Pipits are still quite far north, though many will be on their way south. They don't reach HK until mid-late Sept.
