I think terns are one of the most satisfying and beautiful birds to watch before autumn recommences. I heard there are lots of them around the Tap Mun rocks, but how exactly do I get there? I saw John Holmes's blog and he said he hired a boat to go near the rocks. But how do I actually hire a boat?

This forum is almost dead.

My quick response ... pls try the ferry btw Ma Liu Shui and Tap Mun. There should be plenty photo opportunities. Terns will follow the ferry.

If you insist on renting a boat to Kung Chau near Tap Mun, pls talk to fishermen or storekeepers (purely by chance) and rent a boat there.

Good luck

The Ferry from Ma Liu Shui via Tap Mun to Wong Shek Pier (weekdays 08:30 and 15:00)can be good (but not always).

There photos were taken south of Tap Mun on the afternoon ferry on July 4th...

Sorry for replying so late because I felt that no one was going to respond. What about Mirs Bay? What ferry can I use to see the terns there while also being convenient? Thanks John Holmes for replying!

The “Tern Action” really peaked between Tap Mun and Chek Keng with 120 or more Black-naped Terns, a few Bridled Terns, and one or two Roseate Terns following the ferry.

Does that mean I can go to Wong Shek Pier to Tap Mun, and then Tap Mun to Chek Keng, and go back home?

Thanks so much John! You're one of the most talented birders here.
