Closure of Mai Po Nature Reserve : 13 December 2007

To comply with the Food and Health Bureau guidelines relating to the confirmed case of the highly pathnogenic H5N1virus in a Grey Heron collected from the San Tin area, Mai Po Nature Reserve will be closed to the public from tomorrow (14 December) for at least a 21 day period. Mai Po Nature Reserve falls within a 3Km radius of the infected bird and will be placed as a Protection and Surveillance Zone.

So, Mai Po with one bird 2kms away is closed. Fine, if that's the agreed procedure.

However, Tuen Mun Park, which I believe has had 2 cases and which certainly has many more visitors, remains open.

Ludicrous!

Agreed procedure, based on what?

3km range?
Wetland Park still open
Still zero H5N1 cases in Mai Po
Still looks a tough disease to spread among/by wild birds

Sucks.
