Two anglers landed on a tern island on Jul 13. They created a lot of disturbance while walking around and picking up eggs. After they have settled down, a Roseate Tern remained inside a recess at their back. It carried a white flag on its left leg.
The tern island was completely deserted by Jul 27, except for a pair of Roseate Terns who have to look after their newly fledged young. One of the adults also carried a white flag on the left leg. Perhaps it was the same bird seen 2 weeks ago.
The parents encouraged the young bird to fly. They circled over the chick and stayed close to it both on land and in the air.
Although AFCD had put up 2 banners to advise against disturbing birds, these three anglers didn't appear to understand - they walked around the island to look for a place to fish.
As they approached close to the chick, the two adults attempted to drive them away by diving at high speed.
Failing to stop the angler, the Roseates called to their chick and all three birds fled to the sea.
I was worried that the chick may drown when it ran out of strength.
Fortunately the family returned to the island after 15 minutes.
Hope the chick could grow up and the whole family could return to their homeland safely. Author: Sze Time: 1/08/2008 02:30
