The new Helm Field Guide 'Birds of East Asia' by Mark Brazil is now available from Amazon.
Strictly speaking, this book does not cover Hong Kong, the most southerly China province covered is Fujian. However it probably contains 98% of the Hong Kong species within its 1000 species list. Its coverage is coastal eastern China from Fujian northwards, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and far eastern Russia. It is also the only English Field Guide I am aware of for Taiwan, Japan and the Russian Far East so it is well worth the HK300 dollar price tag for this alone.
On first reading, the bird depictions are generally good although some appear a bit stylised, typical of Helm Guides. It appears a quality publication at a very good price, although a bit heavy to be used as a field guide, more of value as a home reference book.
It seems from the amazon.com website that Princeton will publish the same book in USA at a lower price in late March. I obtained my copy from amazon.co.uk, their UK website.
