Subject: Need ID help for Canvasback [Print This Page] Author: njimmy Time: 11/12/2006 15:48 Subject: Need ID help for Canvasback
Dear all,
I was in Shanghai Binhai park on Dec-10,2006.
Spotted a few ducks and need help in ID. I was wondering this could be a Canvasback ( Aythya valisneria) among the many other Greater Scaup (Aytha marila) I saw.
Cheers from Jimmy Ng

It is too small for a Canvasback; also bill and head shape is typical of Common Pochard and wrong for Canvasback.

Dear Jimmy,
If you are using the eighth edition (2005) of the 'Birds of Hong Kong and South China' by Viney, Phillipps and Ying, for your identification, the Common Pochard and Canvasback headings are the wrong way round on page 53. This might be the source of the confusion.
Cheers,

Thanks for pointing out that now glaring error in Birds of HK and S. China, Bena. It would indeed explain njimmy's mis-identification and potentially that of large nos. of Canvasbacks all over China!
Perhaps some of our members who post to PRC (mainland) birding sites, could draw people's attention to this.
Just a tiny bibliographical correction: the correct citation for the authorship is Viney, Phillipps and Lam.

Being a member of HKBWS and, probably the first Hongkong member of the Shanghai Wild Birds Society ( www.shwbs.org) , I posted the above information to the WWF-China SH birdwatchers' BBS already.

Hi Jimmy,
I think you should also post the information in the forum of ChinaBirdNet which is organized by HKBWS.
Rating by the popularity of the various BBS for China birdwatchers, HKBWS probably need more publicity of that ChinaBirdNet.

Hi Jimmy,
Yes! more publicity about the ChinaBirdNet is required.
At the same, we also need more support from the members of both the HKBWS and SWBS to register into the forum.
Best Regards,
Forrest
