I was at Mai Po at 6.30 am yesterday (22nd May 2009), on the way out to the floating hides the incoming water had a strange smell and looking out across the bay there were hundreds of million of strange bugs in the water and on the birds. What is it and do they affect humans

PS: It was useless taking photos as they were on the birds

Here's a closeup of one on a mudskipper. I'm interested in what they are too. Lucky they didn't swarm into the hide. Neil.
