Heard calling this morning (30/9/09 6.15am) from the Tai Mo Shan side of Lam Tsuen between Ping Long and Ha Tin Liu Ha. The bird called from the dense forest at the edge of the marsh area of the valley. I couldn't see it.
The call:
Two note, deep. Ho-hooooooooooooo, second syllable four to five times the length of the first (and seemed to have a glottal stop halfway through). Call lasted about two seconds. Calls were approximately 30-60 seconds apart. I heard it call five times.
Definitely not a call I have heard before.
I'm currently trawling the internet for calls that match- can anyone direct me to a site? I'll have my mobile phone for recording tomorrow! Here's hoping it is still there. Author: kmatthew Time: 30/09/2009 07:44
Seems like a Brown Wood Owl call?? I can't say I am familiar with this species but your description seems to match it the most. Here is a good site for bird calls: http://www.xeno-canto.org/asia/browse.php?query=Brown+Wood+owlAuthor: lalan Time: 30/09/2009 11:50
Emerald Dove ?? Author: subbuteo Time: 30/09/2009 13:51
Thanks for the links and suggestions. Not Emerald Dove from the recordings I've found, I am confident this was an owl given the spacing of the calls. The call was very distinct. I am afraid I don't have access to books to do any research so that is why I am requesting suggestions.
The second call on the second brown wood owl recording is very similar.
How exciting! Author: cgeoff Time: 30/09/2009 14:19
Any chance of more specific details as to where to go?
I'd like to try recording it.

If I remember correctly, Mike Kilburn heard a Brown Wood Owl behind Tai Om Village in March this year...

Have just listened to the call you link above. This is what my by sounded like - we just describe it differently.
Great stuff! Its good to know Lam Tsuen is still being used by BWO.
Any luck this morning? I'd be interested to learn more.
Do give me call if you have a minute - I'm up already
Cheers

I didn't get out this morning- kids are off school today so I was occupied. I went out last night after 11 pm but heard nothing in the fifteen minutes I was there. I'll keep listening!
