The annual International Black-faced Spoonbill Census took place on 11-13 January 2008 and 9 -11 January 2009. These censuses aimed to provide comparable figures on an annual basis to assess the health of the wintering population and its distribution range. A total of 2,065 and 2,041 Black-faced Spoonbills were counted in 2008 and 2009 respectively. The total figure broke 2,000 for the first time in 2008 since the inception of the census in mid-1990s. There was a big increase of about 22% in 2008 but a small decrease of 1% in 2009 from the previous year. Tsengwen River estuary of Tainan and Deep Bay of Hong Kong and Shenzhen are still the two biggest wintering grounds of this globally endangered species. Enclosed is the report of the census.
