Death of Eurasian Hoopoe

Death of Eurasian Hoopoe

I am sad to report the sudden death of the Eurasian Hoopoe at Tuen Mun Pier yesterday, 16th September 2013.

It is believed the bird arrived sometime around the 9th September and has been feeding along the flower beds around the footpaths in the area.

When I visited the bird on Thursdays (http://www.hkbws.org.hk/BBS/viewthread.php?tid=19500&extra=page%3D1) he was very active, but was also very friendly, walking up to less than one metre from me on several occasions.  The bird being so close to the footpath clearly was drawing a lot of attention from the general public and the area is a popular for dog walkers, not all of which were leashed.

On Saturday, photos of the bird feeding on dog poo were being circulated on facebook.

And then yesterday morning while I was on my way to Po Toi at around 8:30am, I got a the attached photo through on my friends.

It has been rumoured that there are rats poison in the area, others say that someone touched the bird the day before ... but I think the cause the death of is unknown.

RIP ...

After the Naumann's Thrush, earlier this year, another mystery death.
We may have a serial bird killer here.

Any signs of feeding or tyres marks nearby?
There were no signs of feeding etc when I was there .. but I suspect that it maybe rats poison which did this ..
