Abstract:
Hong Kong's Mai Po is the largest remaining wetland in Hong Kong and is
very important for protection of the Black-faced spoonbill (Platalea minor) for
approximately 20% of the world population use this site. Under the Ramsar
Convention, Mai Po and Inner Deep Bay site is required to be monitored for
baseline ecological characteristics including water and sediment quality
and other biologically important parameters. Results of the monitoring since
2001 will be presented and discussed.

About the Speaker:
Ji-Dong Gu is an associate professor of the School of Biological Sciences.
He obtained his BSc from Heilongjiang August First Land Reclamation University
(P.R. China), MSc from University of Alberta (Canada), PhD from Virginia
Tech (USA). Subsequently, he worked in the Microbial Ecology Laboratory of
Harvard University before joining The University of Hong Kong as an assistant
professor in 1999. He publishes in the areas of environmental microbiology and
environmental toxicology with >100 papers, and serves as editor of
International Biodeterioration & Biodegradation, associate editor of
Ecotoxicology, and as editorial board member of Biodegradation, Journal of
Polymers and the Environment, and Microbes and the Environment.
