Heuglin's Gulls usually arrive on the southern sea coasts of Hong Kong in February, sometimes with other species like Black-tailed. The East and West Lamma Channels are popular because they feed off waste thrown overboard from ships. I presume they are coming from all around the Pearl River Delta, having wintered there.
Later they start migrating east and north, passing Po Toi in the afternoons throughout late February and March in flocks of up to 50 birds. See the attached chart for daily records of Heuglin's Gull from Po Toi over the past 5 years.
