[Hong Kong] Eagle sp?

Eagle sp?

This eagle was seen soaring high over Mount Davis this morning, heading towards Central.

I thought Greater Spotted Eagle but the dark trailing edge to the wing and the barred undertail may suggest an adult Steppe Eagle?

I'm not very familiar with eagles, we don't get many down here in the south!

Is it? I thought they had a very obvious white underwing bar or pale underwing.
I could only see a faint pale bar and then only after I lightened the photo with Photoshop.
But I think you are right - I was blinded by my first impression.

Ah well, we don't see many of them in south Hong Kong either.

Thanks for all your messages of comfort that eagles (other than WBSE) really are rather rare on HK Island.

Another three unusual species on HK Island today were these in Wanchai this morning (well, two at least unusual), as I was searching for replacements for the furniture wrecked in my renovation

One HK First Record and another of those pittas again.

This message is probably the last I will be posting for at least two months as I have to return to UK for a longish period.

Good luck to all, and I will be watching this website with interest but from afar until next year.
