Hi there,
I used 40D + 300mmF4 (with IS) + 1.4x. Why 300mmF4? light enough. flexible - 300mm F4 at the Tai Po Kau forest (poor light condition) and 300mm F4 + 1.4x at Long Valley/Mai Po (better light ...
Agree with captain, although i use the nikon 384.
it is very important to note the minimum focusing distance of the 3 lens :
384 / 100-400 / 456
1.5m / 1.8m / 3.5m
If you also want to use the lens to shoot butterflies and dragonflies, 456 may not be a good choice due to low magnification.
If you only want to take bird photo, 456 would be the best choice because it is cheapest.
