Dear birdwatchers (including photographers),

We need to get all the Photoguide materials ready very soon for production.  If you have good photos that you have not submitted, please do it soon.  Not only do we need rare birds, we also need excellent photo of common birds.  Please submit it to Shing or the HKBWS office.  If you have not visited our office, this is good time to do so.

Here are a list of birds I think photo is lacking.  If you have any photo of these species, and if you don't mind letting us use it, please send them to us.

The rules are:
1. Photo must be taken in HK by person who submit it
2. Must submit information on the date and place of the photo
3. The photo is for one-time use by the publisher.  The photographer still own all rights to the photo.
4. We will not pay money to use the photo, but contributors can get a free copy of the new photoguide if their photo is chosen.
5. A small committee of HKBWS will select the photo.

Here are more information on the photos that we need for the photo guide.  These are not all, but these are the most critical at this point.  These are species that we know photos are available somewhere.  Those species that are marked "no photo" means we have not got any new photo submitted this time (or even last time).  We may have to re-use the photo that we have last time if they are any.  Species with a "C" grade mean that we already got some low quality photos but they are not good enough for production.  Species with a "B" grade means that we already got some photos with reasonable quality, but for production purposes, better quality photos are highly desirable.  I hope this list will allow birdwatcher to know what particular species are desparately needed by us, so that they can spend time sorting their collection effectively.  Thank you.

This is in response to Tung's message.  I find it totally surprising too, but that is the reality.  I know a lot of people have photo of the Grey Phalarope in Nam Chung, but there is no submission from that site.  My feeling is that some worry about being accused of getting too close to the bird.

We have to work from here.

Dear Yau,

Although we do not recommand using flash, I think using flash is sometimes necessary.  The photo selection team (of which I am a member) will make decision whether to ban all flash photos.

I saw an article about you as a photographer in a DC Photo magazine.  Nice report.
