Good collection of shorebirds at high tide today (13 Sep) on the scrape and on the newly created rice field ponds at the eastern end of the scrape. Mike Kilburn & I had 25 species, including:

Asian Dowitcher 1
Eurasian Curlew c 150
Eastern Curlew 1
Great Knot 41
Red Knot 3
Dunlin 3
Kentish Plover 3

Also, some Red-necked Stints & Broad-billed Sandpipers.

An Asian Barred Owlet was seen at Mai Po this morning.

Three Great Cormorant came into Northern Mai Po this morning. Maybe the same birds seen in Nam Sang Wai in the summer? Also a Grey headed Lapwing in gei wai #4

There was also an Oriental Plover seen at Mai Po this morning, flying over GW #8. This may be worth looking out for if you are around the reserve in coming days.

The Oriental Plover was flying around Northern Mai Po in the afternoon. It briefly settled on Gei wai #7 near the sluice gate.

No sign of the Tiger Shrike - at least for me. Hope others got it!

Dear all

Though I saw just ordinary migrants like BN Orioles on 25th Sep morning, I was also lucky to
have seen a juvenile Schrenck bittern flying and settle on a reedbed somewhere on pond 17/18
on Fairview side.

2 Jacanas on the scrape (Gei wai #16/17) at lunchtime. Also a Little Curlew reported from Pond #8a (in front of the 3-story bird hide).

20 more Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters over the boardwalk hide and mangroves between 0900 and 1015 this morning.

There was a Common Ringed Plover showing well in front of the Mai Po Boardwalk (New Hide) on the rising tide on Saturday morning. Unfortunately the bird was flushed away by a Peregrine and did not return but may still be in the bay.

A large gull out on the mudflat yesterday afternoon (18 Oct). Long way out, but possibly a Vega.

A Blue Whistling Thrush was present last friday morning at the Car park around 6:00 AM.(4th of november)
The bird was calling continuously for about 5 minutes.
It seems to have very few or no record for Mai Po. Probably a migrant bird that had stopped there.

Hi Katherine, thanks for the information, I'm so sad i did'nt know it when I heard the bird, Would have been an other sensation to know I was hearing a new Mai Po bird species:-)
There is a hight probability this bird was a migrant, this is my second time to get BW Thrush on totally unexpected places, the last time was at Dong Ting lake Hunan province in poplar plantation.

Are Burmese Spotbill seen in Deep Bay anymore? Haven't heard one reported in a long time.

News has come out that two swans were seen in Deep Bay from the new hide at about 5:15 pm today.

They were too distant to be identified to species.

No further information available.

22 Nov afternoon
Didn't see the swans, but saw:
A Crested Goshawk (quite unusual?) by the access road, near the car park
An adult male Cinnamon Bittern, 3 Oriental Reed Warblers and 1 Black-Browed Reed Warbler, all in the reeds by the Tower Hide.
A single Common Buzzard.

I would say the Cinnamon Bittern is a good deal more unusual than Crested Goshawk which I have seen several times in the Mai Po vicinity.   In terms of date the Cinnamon Bittern may be close to the latest ever.

Today at Mai Po :

240 + BF Spoonbill (according to Dixon) one of which had a red tag on the right upper leg - E(or F) 02
3 Purple Heron ( 1 juv 2 ad)

Imperial Eagle (ad)
Greater Spotted Eagle (juv)
Peregrine (juv)

Water Rail ( channel next to Education Cente reed bed - near the bridge)
Common Starling  (Water Buffalo paddock)
9 Chinese Grosbeak (Waterfowl Collection)

+ probable Radde's Warbler near ringing hut

A Dusky Warbler with ring found yesterday...I don't know whether anyone want to know

Thank you for the report of the ringed Dusky Warbler, Stephen. A lot of Dusky Warblers are ringed each year at Mai Po, and this wil almost certainly be one of those birds.

Unfortunately the ring number cannot be read on this photo to allow individual identification. If you have more photos it may be possible to work out the ring number to know which individual this is.
