[Kingfisher] Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher

Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher

Some time ago, I issued a request for information on a couple who we thought had photographed an Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher at Tai Po Kau on 7 May 2015, see here

As a result, we have at last been able to locate the couple, a Mr and Mrs Luk, who readily supplied us with their photographs.

Mr Luk is a nature enthusiast and photographer, although not a bird watcher, and they regularly visit Tai Po Kau to photograph wildlife there. On 7 May 2015, on their way down from TPK to the main road, Mrs Luk spotted and photographed the kingfisher sitting on a branch about 20 metres to the left of the access road about 5 minutes up from the car park, and took three photographs. Mr Luk was also able to take three photographs before the bird zipped off at great speed into the trees.

Here are two photographs, one each from Mrs Luk and Mr Luk, from the six they have given us

Mr Luk also showed us the exact location today. Unfortunately, the tree has now been cut down for some unknown reason. Here is Mr Luk at the location and what remains of the tree

This will be a first record for Hong Kong if accepted by the Records Committee.

My thanks to Mr Luk for being so co-operative and also to Wilson Dring for giving the first indication of the record, Harry Miller and Meiling Tang for helping to identify them, and Bonnie Chan and Wai Yan Lo at the HKBWS Office for helping with communications.

Please note these photographs were first noticed from Mr Luk's Facebook page. If any individuals see interesting records such as these posted on Facebook, please inform the HKBWS Office who will follow up if necessary.
