66.5 thousand trees were burnt down in a fire at Tai Lam Country Park. AFCD plans to reforest the burnt area in 10 years. A new “ecological engineering” approach will be adopted to improve the diversity of the woodland. Native trees will be planted at suitable areas. HF Cheung, Chairman of HKBWS commented that the fire could be an opportunity to switch from the previous low value exotic woodland to an environment that is more attractive to foraging birds.
大欖焦土再植樹重現生機
【明報專訊】大欖郊野公園山林大火，令460公頃林木成為焦土，漁農自然護理署連日點算後發現，大量樹木被焚毀的重災區，全部處於緩衝區範圍，園內較高生態價值的核心部分幸未被波及。該署計劃明年雨季開始，重點為這些地點植林，透過嶄新的植林方法，及增植本地樹種，務求以10年時間令這片焦土回復生機，甚至更勝從前。

本地樹種更適合生物棲息
香港觀鳥會主席張浩輝表示，大欖山火是一個契機，讓政府重新在這片土地種植更合適生物棲息的本地樹種，「千萬不要再交行貨」。大欖發生山火的地點，生態價值一向偏低，其中的主要原因是充斥大量外來樹種，他建議考慮種植多果樹木如榕樹，吸引鳥類覓食。
