David Thomson

This year, Dr. David Thomson took up an associate professorship at HKU at the beginning of this semester. His research aim here is to understand how wildlife populations respond and adapt to environmental change.
Dr. Thomson was first got into ecology through an interest in bird-watching and he likes to interact with others who enjoy studying the natural world. He is particularly interested in climate change and has worked with networks of birdwatchers to study its long-term effects on bird populations. He did a degree in zoology/ animal ecology, at Aberdeen University, then a PhD in the ornithology unit at the University of Glasgow. He then worked as a quantitative ecologist at the British Trust for Ornithology, before taking up a research fellowship at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology, Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences. After that, he went on to run the Laboratory of Evolutionary Biodemography at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research.
