Thanks.  I have a Canon Camera and 100-400mm Lens.  I wonder what is the differnce in Leica 800mm Lens (which many of our birders are using) as compared to a Canon 800mm Lens which is very expensive.

Is this related to auto-focus function?  What is a proper set up with Canon (say 7D or 5D Mark II) with Leica 800mm.  Can it be just 'plug and play'?  

A stupid question:  where to get the Leica 800mm and approximate cost of it?

Dear TSA,

  The lens is operated in manually. If you wanted AF, Canon 800mm is the choose.
  It is using a Leica R to Canon EOS adaptor to join the EOS. The adaptor is easy to buy.
  You can ask one of the biggest and olderest camera shop in Mong Kok about its details.
  Or you can find the main dealer in HK in this web page:http://en.leica-camera.com/service/dealer_locator/
  You may find 2nd hand lens in Taiwan more easily.
  I bought it 6 years ago. It costed Euro10000.
  It may cost 2 sets of Canon 800mm now...

Just saw two photos on the Bird's ID section, taken by Leica 800mm + 7D, frankly speaking, I'm disappointed by the quality of the photos......and at such price.... don't get me wrong, has noting to do with cthomas, I am talking about the equipment.

It is not fair to comment the quality of equipment based on the posted photos of such small sizes.

I think if you look at Thomas's other posts, you will see that the quality is much much higher!! Very good work of a manual lens too!! May I know which lens is heavier?? The Canon or Leica??

Without doubt, most of the lenses from Leica are excellent in resolution and color renditioning and they deserve to be fitted on DSLRs of a better digital processing engine and a bigger pixel size in order to show their worth.
A pity, however, that these lenses do not go autofocus.
Without second thought, I would say that Leica's must be way heavier than Canon's. I have not seen CThomas in person but I am sure that his arms must be like Popeye's, having carried such a heavy tool around in the field for years.

  I think Leica 800mm is heavier because it is almost 7kg.

Thomas photo quality attracted my attention and hence I asked the question.  I am not very sure what I should do if I would like to upgrade my gear.

Canon 800 mm spec as per attached link.

It weights 4.5 KG and it is indeed not cheap.  Of course, there were also plenty high quality photos posted recently.

Some birders are using 500mm plus an extension lens to achieve approx 800mm.  Perhaps we need some good advices on differnt set ups in related to their autofocus ability.  With such distance, is autofocus effectively?  I may ask another stupid question.

For using teleconvertor, I would suggest to use on f2.8 lenses only. For f4 lenses, it affects the PQ and AF speed, maximum I would use is 1.4x on those lenses (in fact, prefer not using one). Sometime you may find cropping the picture will result in better quality. In my opinion, whether you choose 500/600/800 is a matter of price and portability. Many chings go for 500mm base on price and portability.

If you think Canon 800mm lens is expensive and heavy, Leica 800mm definitively is not your choice. Canon 800mm is lighter than 600mm due to smaller max. apetitude. Hope it helps.

I went to Canon show room and they did not have a 800mm lens for demo.  Would appreciate further advice where we can have hands-on feeling/testing for such lens.

I saw two(2) 2nd hand 1.4/f 500mm Canon in TST, asking for around HK$28,600, those who are interested might want to go and have a look.  This lens is too big for me.....I mean if I go hiking, I wouldn't want to carry it, the 800mm is even bigger and heavier.
