Some additional information about the above management practice:
Spring/summer drain-down of the Mai Po
gei wai is a fairly new management practice at the Reserve. Its inclusion into the annual management cycle follows successful field trials in 2009 which recorded day counts of over 1,000 waterbirds feeding in slowly draining
gei wai. The draining provides extra food to locally breeding herons and egrets in early summer, then to their fledged young in late summer.
This spring/summer 9
gei wai will be drained down and aside from the direct benefit to waterbirds, it offers a fantastic opportunity to watch and photograph waterbirds congregating together as they feast on small fish, shrimp and larvae.
