PUI O, 9 December 2012

Thanks Jin-pan and Ray for guiding today. Redstarts, bluetails, pipits were in abundant supply. Also starring had been the merry-go-round sunbird, easygoing slaty-brested rail, plover-on-beach, showdown of crested goshawk vs. besra (Jap sparrowhawk?). C'est magnifi ! Deserve another trip in near future.

多謝Ray 和 Jin-pan今天背澳的帶領, 主題處處, 值得短期重遊。請鳥友把照片上載。

Yes, thank you very much, Ray and 煎烹, for sharing such a lovely morning with us.

There were also many Blackbirds, the Bluethroat generously displaying its blue breast, the Crested Goshawks performing frequently, one of which flew aound and across the daymoon, as well the Grey-backed Thrush, the Black-faced Bunting and the Asian Brown Flycatcher showing up when we were about to walk back to the bus stop.  It was a very exciting morning.  Thank you very much

More on the sunbird story. Apparently the male sunbird recognized its mirror reflection as a potential rival and kept pecking on the "rival" for at least 3 minutes. Cool scene.
For me the climax of the day is the air battle between the two raptors. Or, more accurately, bullying instead of a fight, because the Crested Goshawk just kept fleeing...

So sad though is we saw housing development bit by bit taking over Pui O...
What used to be illegal dumping sites now turned into legal village house construction sites.
How many Pui O can we lose?

I wasn't able to participate, but I am interested to go there myself. Would anyone tell me what was the route taken? Thanks!

Just go around the area near the mouth of the stream, the abandoned fields and the beach south of the main South Lantau Road.  Very easy without ambiguity.  I visited there by myself last Mon and saw almost all the recorded species previously taken including the bluethroat and slaty-breasted rail except the raptors, the grey-backed thrush and the swallows.
