[Hong Kong] Oriental or Lesser Cuckoo (中/小杜鵑) ????

Oriental or Lesser Cuckoo (中/小杜鵑) ????

2014-05-10 Po Toi

The bird was seen at the hillside behind toilets near the pier.  No calls at all.

Regarding size, it was bigger than a Plaintive cuckoo, but I can't really tell how much bigger as there was no reference around I could use on the spot.  I also post some uncropped photos to help showing the size of it.

I have reservations regarding the ID of many on the Lesser Cuckoos on OBI which are of migrants/wintering birds and as such would not be vocalizing and thus ID would be based on plumage.

My experience of singing males and museum specimens (which can be measured to confirm ID) is that the bars on the underparts of Lesser Cuckoo are very distinctive in that they are clearly 'broken' across the belly as in this individual:

As such, I think your bird is probably a Lesser Cuckoo.
