Abstract:
The research of Prof. Furness has focused on seabirds as monitors of
the marine environment, and the impacts of the fishing industry on
seabirds.  This has taken him to many parts of the world from the
Arctic to the sub-Antarctic.  He chaired the ICES Working Group on
Seabird Ecology, and IAPEME, a panel providing advice to the Danish
government on monitoring environmental impacts of marine wind
farms.  He was an assessor for Marine Stewardship certification of
fisheries on walleye pollock, Alaskan halibut and sablefish.  Prof.
Furness has supervised over 40 PhD students, and has published
papers in Nature, Science, Ecology and many other leading journals.  
He currently holds a Leverhulme Trust Fellowship.

In this lecture, Prof. Furness will introduce the ecology of seabirds
and their relationships with fisheries and aquaculture.  Improper
changes in fishery management, however, can be damaging to seabird
communities.  With a view to development of more ‘seabird-friendly’
fisheries management in the future, Prof. Furness will illustrate how
we can adjust fisheries management to reduce harm to seabirds in his
talk.
