Thank you all of you for your bird reports and great pictures which provide more data for the LV project. Please keep up your good work! Thank you very much!

A Ruff and a Grey Plover was seen in LV last Friday!
The Grey Plover is a LV first!

16 Nov, Friday

A quail (probably a japanese quail) is briefly seen today.
It flew for a short distance disappears in the field quickly, so i am not sure about the actual species.
But the body shape and voice were both quite different from that of snipes, so i think it was most likely to be a quail.

The Siberian Rubythroat was still there but i only saw it once today, near sunset.

A Citrine Wagtail was also seen.

A flock of starlings (>100) flew to the west.

29 Nov
An afternoon visit to LV this week. A farmer said the Water Cress (Sai Yeung Choi) was coated with ice in the early morning (Luckily I visited there in the afternoon)! The cold weather didn't bring much surprising species to LV but I had a chance to see so many waders resting and feeding activly in the shallow water habitats managed by HKBWS.

Richard Lewthwaite and I saw a Spotted Bush Warbler at Long Valley at around 5pm this evening. If accepted by the records committee this would be the first sight record in Hong Kong - there have been two previus records of trapped birds

The bird was found by Richard on the edge of the field to the south of the HKBWS shallow water habitat (close to a tin shack that is falling apart under a tree).  It was much less shy than Russet or Brown Bush Warbler, climing up to eye level in response to pishing.

The features to look for are:

1. White tips to dark undertail coverts - this idetifies it as a bradypterus bush Warbler.

2. Supercilium extending beyond the eye

3. Gorget of spots on the lower thoat/uppr breast

4. Slender, pointed bill with mostly pale lower mandible (although with a dark tip.

Very much hope someone can get a photo - a really good Christmas challenge!

Cheers
