Oriental Honey Buzzard?

Oriental Honey Buzzard?

Po Toi, September 27th.

When I first saw this raptor, I thought Spotted Eagle from the broad wings with ragged ends, overall dark colour and size compared with Black Kite.

However, the photos tell another story. The tail has two light and dark tail bands. Also the tail is too long for Spotted Eagle.

I think this is an Oriental (Crested) Honey Buzzard. A very dark phase bird, also a female I would think from the size compared with Black Kite.

Grateful for some comments by individuals with more experience of this species. This is my first, and my first on Po Toi.

This experience confirms my view, that for me, taking photos is better than using binoculars. As with many birds, you have to make a choice between the two. This bird was slowly drifting away. I may eventually have seen the tail bands, but with the photos, I can show it to others.

I agree, this should be a Honey Buzzard. The dark bands on the tail shows clearly, and the oddly shaped head also suggest a Honey Buzzard.

And indeed, recording with photographs has became more and more important!!
