Gulls identification

A flock of gulls roosted on a rock by the shore was seen during the
15 Mar 2003- Stonecutters Kite breeding survey.  6 gulls with yellowish and 19 pinkish legs.

Here attached picture, please kindly help identify the species.  Thanks.

The one on the right hand side looks like a taimyrensis adult and the one at the centre, a mongolicus. I'm not sure about the juveniles. Hope this helps.

Referring only to birds that are fully visible...

The left hand two 1st year gulls appear to be Heuglin's Gulls Larus heuglini.

The third from the left, also a 1st year, is rather unclear. It is probably also heuglini.

The 4th bird from the left, a 2nd year showing a grey mantle and some grey in the coverts, is probably a mongolicus, although they are usually whiter below than this bird and have broader white tips to the tertials.

The 5th from the left, an adult with pink legs, is interesting. It doesn't appear to be mongolicus as the extensive streaking on the hindneck would be very unusual indeed at this time of year. It might be an adult Vega Gull L. vegae, but the different angle of the bird compared to the birds nearby means that an accurate assessment of mantle colour is difficult. The apparent extensive and diffuse streaking on the hindneck is good for vegae. However, it would be necessary to see other photos to be certain.

The 6th from left, a 1st year with very white underparts, appears to be a 1st year mongolicus. Notice the full-chested appearance, the paleness of the underparts and the clearly-defined dark centres to the mantle and scapular feathers.

The bird standing behind the latter, the 7th from the left, is a 1st year heuglini.

As Koel says, the very dark-mantled adult is heuglini. Note that although it has obviously yellow legs, it is not Yellow-legged Gull! All Yellow-legged Gulls in HK have pink or pinkish legs!

As you can see, some of this is tentative, reflecting the difficulties of gull identification, and especially based on one photo.

I am interested in photos of any gulls taken in HK, so if anybody has photos they would be willing to let me see, please contact me at: gjcarey@netvigator.com Alternatively, put them on this site.

Dear Geoff,

Thanks for the lead.  It's detail and good for learning.

I am going to add numbers on the above photo.  Please tell if the numbers don't match your identification.

Will post one to two more shots, it's so interesting to learn!

Best,
Etta

Dear Geoff,

Just modified the photos (now 3 with numbers).

See if the numbers on the 'A' photo relevant to your first reply.  Thanks.
