This morning at Mt Austin I spent a good twenty minutes staring into a bush watching a very skulking bird, I did get a few good looks at it. Over all size was slightly larger than a dusky warbler, seemed chunkier, plumage a warm bright orange brown colour, slightly brighter below on flanks, belly and vent, white at the throat and chest. There were a few spots on the chest. I didn't see the scaling shown on the vent in HK Birds. I couldn't see any other distinct markings. The face was very plain, a hint of an eyebrow over the eye. Russet Bush Warbler is supposed to go zee-bit, this was making a chacking noise, unlike Dusky Warbler, almost like a gecko or a cicada warming up... I wasn't sure it was a bird until I saw it. It made a lot of noise when a Dusky started calling nearby- again a distinclty different call. So- russet bush warbler? Does this sound like one? It certainly looked like one. If anyone wants to try, it is in the azeleas below the fence on the right as you walk towards the lookout point (towards High West). Also seen this morning was a two-barred greenish warbler, spent a couple of minutes in the open making a lot of noise. Good luck.

Any idea about the bill color? Does it spread the fan-like tail when it give the chatting sound? Though it could be a bush warbler, it's difficult to seperate Brown Bush Warbler from Russet Bush Warbler without hearing the "see-bit" sound or noting the undertail covert. As both of them are not quite rare in hillside shrubland nowaday. Gary
