Today at Tai Po Kau's Blue Walk, I saw two adult Rufous-capped Babblers carrying food to feed their juvenile birds. Because the bamboo bush there was too dense, I could only see one juvenile bird. However, I could hear at least two calling juvenile birds inside the bamboo bush. I, therefore, guessed that there were one to three juveniles.

I would like to know whether there is any breeding records of r-c babbler in the past? Were their breeding at Tai Po Kau just started in last few years? If not, is this the first breeding record of HK?

Meanwhile, I have also seen three Blue and White Flycatchers (2M1F) and a Mountain Bulbul near the bamboo bush area.

Hi George

Rufous-capped Babler has been spreading in suitable habitat in Hong kong over the last few years.  I encounter it frequently at Tai Po Kau and  Ng Tung Chai and especially at Tai Po Kau Lookout  just to the northeast  of Tai Po Kau.

This may indeed be the first proven breeding record - there is no mention of breeding success in the Avifauna - only of singing males.

Cheers
Mike

PS I appreciate the bilingual posting - thanks!

A group of voluntary birdwatchers did visit Tai Po Kau, Shing Mun and Kln Hill catchment between 98-02, but probably not this yr for personal reason (So people can contact me at wongcaptain@yahoo.com if they would like to follow up the survey).

We did see a newly-fledging RCB in around 2000 in Shing Mun. It stand with another bird nearby. The "dirty" plumage condition suggested that it is a newly fledging bird.

I forget whether there were such records in latter yrs. Anyway, your record definitely reinforces the breeding status of this bird in HK.

Captain, your idea is right because i have seen five Rufous-capped Babbler including two adult and three food-begging juveniles in Shing Mun taday at 11:30am. Three newly fledged  juveniles have not had the tails.
The discovery can prove RCB which are well developed  in Tai Po Kau and Shing Mun.
