Chinese Egret in Shandong 海驢島的黃嘴白鷺

In the Chinese Magazine "Civilization 文明", issue 2004 no.3, it was reported that 500-600 Chinese Egret come to "Sea Ass Island 海驢島" (an island just outside the tip of the Shandong Peninsula) to breed. There are excellent pictures of the bird and its juvenile. It is also amazing that the article reports of the absence of Chinese Egret in HK since 1980 (of course this is not true, only the breeding birds are absent). The author has done some research on the status of this bird.

白衣紳士——海驢島上的黃嘴白鷺
「在海驢島，黃嘴白鷺大都將家安在海島北坡頂峰的草叢或岩壁縫隙間，營巢時密 集成群。巢比較簡陋，通常由枯枝和草莖構成淺盤狀，每窩產卵2∼5枚，卵的顏色 為淡青色。
每年5∼7月繁殖期間，黃嘴白鷺的各種奇特行為更是妙趣橫生。一般成年雄鷺都有 屬于自己的領域，這個領域神聖不可侵犯，當雌鷺闖入其領域時，雄鷺會機警地伸 展冠羽、蓑羽和胸羽進行威嚇，這時，雌鷺必須耐心等待。當雄鷺收縮蓑羽，表示 同意雌鷺停留在其領域的邊緣時，它們之間的戀情才算拉開序幕。起初是雙方默默 對視，嘴喙相碰，然後雙雙起飛，在空中長時間地比翼翱翔。待飛回落到枝頭或岩 石上後，它們互相追逐，有時也會相對翩翩起舞，以此來表示彼此的愛慕和信任。 雌鷺產卵後，雌雄鳥要輪班看守鳥蛋，絕不允許其他鳥類進入自己的領地。」
