I think it is a finless porpoise (江豚, Neophocaena phocaenoides) as we can see there is a ridge covered with small tubercles along the middle of the back. The illusion of a small fin in the image may be caused by the animal bending its body and diving into the water after breathing at the water surface.

I'm happy to see you got a great photo as finless porpoise is shy and hardly seen. Although Po Toi is one of its range in HK water, they usually hang around there during summer.

I think the species, "Finless Porpoise" has already been mentioned on the Trip Report under "Other than Birds".  Pls check again, thanks.

I think it's certainly a Finless Porpoise, but I just wonder why ours are so dark in colour.  Both the cetacean reference works I have (Reeves et al's Sea Mammals of the World and Carwardine's Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises) suggest they should be much paler in colour, turning black only after death. This one appears to be at least very dark grey to me, as all the ones I've seen in the field have, here in HK and in the Matzu islands ('Taiwan' held, off Fujian).

Maybe this discussion should take place on a cetaceans BBS!
