Wildlife Rehabilatation for Ardeidae species 救治鷺鳥

Hi,
I am only fluent in English and know a little Manderin,

I am on the other side of the boarder. Being that I am not a citizen of China, there is little I can do to stop traditional markets that are catching cattle Egrets & Herons to sell to local dinning establishments,

But I can buy their freedom and let them go, as I am sure many people do.

One problem is the injured & orphaned birds that require medical attention and care.

I have been able to help a few already, removing fishhooks, stitches/wound care and pediactric care for orphaned birds(cannot fish or fly yet).

I know there is not such a big problem of trapping on the HK side of the boarder, but who does this work in your community? I would like to work together with them and exchange ideas on their care, release sites, and topics that involve long-term conservation.

[I also do physical therapy work with disabled songbirds.]

If you do this work or know someone who also does this work(wildlife rehabilitation), please E-mail me or pass on my e-mail address to them at

kimberly4birds@yahoo.com

Thankyou,
Kimberly

To be frank, if you want to stop wildlife trade, pls do not buy any wildlife in markets.

Your kindness will only encourage collectors / poachers to catch more for selling to you.

If you want to get advice on wildlife rehabilatation, pls contact fauna conservation department of Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden at fauna@kfbg.org. There are lots of experts helping wildlife.

Yes, and when it rains, the ground gets wet.

After living here five years and seeing thousands of Migratory birds trapped and on the menu for 'Visitors', or just left to die while awating a sale in a rusty cage- extremely underfed and ill, I wanted to help what few I could. I can not offer the money a restraunt can, they usally buy the healthy perky birds that can just fly away if free.

If I ignore the problem, or just cover my eyes when I walk buy the  market, as you suggested, they do not go away.

Is there a program in place there that discourages HK citizens from crossing the boarder and comeing here to eat them? That would actully be more effective.

They do not catch them to eat for the people here. Usally someone from Japan, Taiwain or HK comes here to eat endangered species or what they can't in their own areas and pay big money to do so..

They hate to see me I make them feel guilty and cut the price much lower than a market could get from a restraunt. Especially when the bird is suffering from an injury and needs medical treatment right away.

If they don't sell to restraunts, the real big money market will be gone.

I was hoping to speak to another expirenced wildlife rehabiltator like myself who may visit this board.

I can appreciate how you feel, but I would also hesistate to make bargains with illegal wildlife dealers.

According to the following news report (in Chinese), the government of Shenzhen have decided on 28 Aug 03 to ban consumption of wildlife that are protected in China:

http://www.southcn.com/news/dishi/shenzhen/shizheng/200308280215.htm

"Anyone who sells, operates or organizes eating of protected wild animals will be heavily prosecuted", so the "Regulation" said.

"The Forestry, Fisheries, Industries and Trade Administrations may impose fines on the offenders and confiscate the animals."

Have you ever tried reporting the case to those Adminstrations, when it is safe to do so?

Perhaps reporting to the local newspapers or even TV station may help, especially as a foreigner.
