Best regards, Dwight Peck, Ramsar.

The 10th Anniversary of the Ramsar COP5, Kushiro Conference
International Workshop on Wise Use of Lagoon Wetlands

First Announcement

* Introduction

"Lagoon wetlands" appear in the inter-tidal zones, where sea water and fresh water meet each other. It has a tremendously high biodiversity, which makes it an extremely important habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. Human
beings have also been utilizing this precious natural resources for fishery and livelihood since the ancient times. However, the increase of human use have promoted reclamation, landfill, and drainage of the lagoon wetlands in
a dramatic speed, which lead to serious problems such as water pollution,  loss of biodiversity, and the collapse of fisheries.

The purpose of this workshop is to provide an opportunity to learn, exchange ideas, and explore the solution for the conservation, restoration, and wise use of the lagoon wetlands in Asia including Japan. Furthermore, we are
aiming at expanding the network among researchers, NGO staffs, and governmental officials who cope with these issues nationally, and internationally.
