Subject: China Birding News May 2005(1)

Dear OBers,
Apologies for any cross-posting.

Greetings from Mainland China. Below is the China Birding News for May 2005.

In the 2005 Beidaihe International Birding Race held from May 1st to May 15th, 247 species of birds were recorded, including Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher (which was the second regional rerecord), Jack Snipe, Japanese Swamp Warbler and Chinese Egret. More than 500 Litter Curlew were reported at one of the sites. A total of 308 bird watchers (belonging to 39 teams) participated in this competition, including international birders from Britain, America, Australia, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, as well as domestic birders from Beijing, Shanghai, Henan, Hunan, Hebei of Mainland China, and Taipei, Nantou, Taoyuan, Zhanghua of Taiwan. This competition was! held in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the beginning of international bird watching activities at Beidaihe.

Beidaihe and its neighbouring areas are an important passage area for migratory birds in East Asia. Tens of thousands of birds pass through here in spring and autumn each year, including many rare and threatened species. Beidaihe has thus become a birding site of international reputation.

The 2005 international birding race was initiated by Beijing Bird Watching Society and Beidaihe International Bird Watching Society, and was co-sponsored by China Wildlife Conservation Association, Hebei Province Wildlife Conservation Association, Qinhuangdao Forestry Bureau, together with Beijing Bird Watching Society and Beidaihe International Bird Watching Society. It was organized with an aim to promote bird watching activities, and to call for public attention to the importance of habitat conservation around the Beidaihe area, thereby helping to preserve favourable habitat conditions for migratory birds passing through.
