Message from the WWF Mai Po Nature Reserve

In order to assist the HKSAR Government’s contractor who monitors bird viruses in Hong Kong, WWF will be placing some bird seed mix onto the earth bund by Island 3 inside gei wai 16/17. This is to attract wintering waterfowl onto the area so they can be caught and samples taken to be tested for H5N1 before release. The area will be baited every few days throughout the winter although trapping will only be done once or twice per month. Aside from the importance of this monitoring work, there may be an indirect benefit by encouraging more waterfowl onto the gei wai for visitors to see. This is similar to the supplementary feeding on Ponds 15a and 15b (Waterfowl Collection), that WWF does every year.

WWF is always pleased to receive comments from users of the Reserve about the work we do and ways to improve the Reserve. If you do have any comments, then please contact the Mai Po staff and we will do what we can to help. Our contact is Tel: 2471-6306 ; Fax: 2482-0369 ; e-mail: lyoung@wwf.org.hk.
