Subject: [Ramsar-CEPA-Eng] A new manual on wetland education centres and reporton children's activities at COP9

Good morning CEPA people:

Two items of news to tempt you from the endless emails waiting to be answered.

The first is a message from Malcolm Whitehead from Wetland Link International about the launching of a new manual on developing a wetland centre, with an emphasis on centres that are open to the public. Definitely one to read and pass on to colleagues involved with wetland centres.

The second is a report from Teddy Tindamanyire from Uganda’s Communications Unit in the Wetlands Inspection Division who has written a thorough report on their diverse activities organised for children both before and during the COP.  A companion to the report from Reiko Nakamura posted some weeks ago.

1. DEVELOPING A WETLAND CENTRE  - A NEW MANUAL FROM WETLAND LINK INTERNATIONAL (WLI)

- Can you help me ? I'm interested in building a wetland centre.
-  This place is great - we must get one in our country.
- What is a wetland centre, anyway, and where can I find out more ?

The concept of a wetland centre is not familiar to many people. We understand the words "nature reserve", "national park", "botanic garden", "museum" and "zoo". A wetland centre open to the public may contain elements of all these things, but what is it exactly?

This online manual attempts to answer the questions. It also outlines some of the philosophy, thinking and questions to be considered when developing and running a wetland centre. The emphasis is on CEPA (communications, education and public awareness) within wetland centres that are open to the public as conservation centres and visitor attractions.

Contents include: the CEPA context of wetland centres, why develop a centre, messages, audiences, interpretation, interpretative media, operations, hearts and minds, case studies, glossary, references and links.

The manual is free from www.wli.org.uk. It may be downloaded in PDF format in English, French, Spanish, simple Chinese and (soon) Portuguese.

Wetland Link International is a global network of wetland education centres with 300 members in more than 60 countries on six continents. It is coordinated as a conservation programme of the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), the only UK-based charity dedicated to the international conservation of wetlands and their biodiversity.

The WLI manual was funded by the UK Government Department of Food, Environment and Rural Affairs. The WLI network is supported by HSBC Bank plc.

Contact the WLI Coordinator (Malcolm.whitehead@wwt.org.uk) for more information and details of how to join.

2. Children's Activity at COP9. The report from Uganda's Teddy Tindamanyire details the many activities organised for local schoolchildren both during and after the COP by Uganda's Wetlands Inspection Division. It includes full details of the original plans, the activities achieved and a useful section on lessons learned. You can see the report here http://www.ramsar.org/outreach_campaigns_uganda_childrencop9.htm; you will also find a link to the report from Reiko Nakamura on the Children's Appeal at COP9 which was highlighted in an earlier message to the list.

Best wishes for a restful weekend, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
