Consequently, unwanted grasses, especially Paspalum spp. are invading the shallower parts of many gei wai, reducing the quality of the original reedbed.     As a result, there is a long-term need to remove the accumulated materials to ‘rejuvenate’ the Mai Po reedbeds. Accordingly, earthmoving work will be carried out in a 2 hectare block of reeds at gei wai #8 this autumn. Prior to the earthmoving work, the gei wai needs to be partially drained from mid-July for a fortnight to allow workers to cut reeds in the area where earthmoving will take place. The earthmoving works will commence in August and are expected to finish in October.     The works present an ideal opportunity for ornithological research upon enhanced reedbed habitats.
