Habitat Work at Gei Wai #8 基圍生境工程 : Autumn 秋 2006

Silt Removal at Gei wai #8

This autumn there will be essential earthmoving works inside gei wai #8 and the water level will need to be lowered for much of the period.

The reason for this work is that over the last 20 years the reedbed habitats inside Mai Po Nature Reserve have been silting up due to a natural accumulation of dead plant material and sediment deposition. Consequently, unwanted grasses, especially Paspalum spp. are invading the shallower parts of many gei wai, reducing the quality of the original reedbed.

As a result, there is a long-term need to remove the accumulated materials to ‘rejuvenate’ the Mai Po reedbeds. Accordingly, earthmoving work will be carried out in a 2 hectare block of reeds at gei wai #8 this autumn. Prior to the earthmoving work, the gei wai needs to be partially drained from mid-July for a fortnight to allow workers to cut reeds in the area where earthmoving will take place. The earthmoving works will commence in August and are expected to finish in October.

The works present an ideal opportunity for ornithological research upon enhanced reedbed habitats. Consequently WWF Hong Kong will be instigating a 5-year research study.

WWF is sorry for any inconvenience this may cause to bird-watchers, but we hope you understand that such management, which is employed by other Nature Reserves to manage their reedbed habitats, is necessary to maintain the ornithological interest of the Mai Po reedbeds.

If you require any further information please telephone the WWF Mai Po Office on 2471 6306 and ask for Lew Young, Tobi Lau or Bena Smith.
