Actually I was one of those lucky guys who could see the Siberian Crane in December 2002.  I was on vacation leave during that day. (It was a weekday!) I first read about the discovery of the Crane from newspaper, then I gathered more information from the BBS but it was the message from the birdline stating that the Crane was still there at 8am that motivated me to drive to MaiPo as soon as possible. Fortunately, I arrived there 15 minutes before the Crane flew back to Shenzhen!
