Hi Thomas,

Any comment to your new Nikon Coolscan 5000?
I am using a Coolscan 4000 to scan both my slides and negative films. However, I found that the scanned quality of the negative film was not so satisfactory.
Do you think it is worth to upgrade to Coolscan 5000?

Regards

Thomas,

Welcome to the Forum!

Would want to see the subject filling the frame; too small as is  Rather unfortunate with the BIG rusty nail next to the bird too

What exactly is your problem with negative film scanning using the 4000, Forrest? I'm happy with mine but need to be just a little more careful with noise/grain compares it to slide.

Hi KK,

You have mentioned it, i.e. the noise/grain problem. For ISO400 negative, I could not get a clear scanned image of blue sky as same as the print out.
Besides, some functions of Nikon Scan 3.1 are not so user friendly. I don't know whether it is improved in Nikon Scan 4.

Regards
Forrest

Hi Forrest,

I have bought Coolscan 5000 only one week.
I haven't compared with Coolscan 4000 and 5000 before I bought it.
I think I should buy the newest model.
I post one photo for your question.

Thomas.

Hi Thomas,

Wonderful! A hard to see moment!
Can we have a close up of them?

Try using the Digital GEM function on the Coolscan 4000ED and that may solve your film grain problem on negative films. Suggest a setting of between 2 and 3 depending on the film type in hand ...

Good luck, Forrest!

Thomas,

For once I have to agree and disagree with KK, personally I like the rusty nail as it gives an idea of the size of the bird, BUT I feel, the shot should have been cropped so that the bird was more dominant in the frame.
