EOS-10D, EF400/5.6L with BB @ -1 1/3
Incident @ -1/3, ISO 200
For those who are interested in advancing their bird photography skills, I thought I post this 'ordinary' shot here to illustrate some of the techniques I used for shooting white subject such as the egret.
The shot of this Little Egret, Egretta garzetta, was taken late last Nov. I made use of the backlighting situation and applied fill-in flash to bring out feather details ... It's just a way of balancing between ambient and fill in this case.

Wow, another excellent fill-in shot with great details!
One question that often come to my mind. Is it at all possible to use fill-in flash when photographing from the bird hides  I sometimes struggle to get clearance for the lens itself. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to also accommodate the flash  Or do you just go to the open areas and forget about the hides?
Is it necessary to use a flash arm (such as Wiberley) or would mounting the flash directly on the camera be sufficient? How do you normally mount your flash

Angus,
Due to small opening of the shutter in the hides using flash extender is nearly impossible. One option is to request for having vertical shutter(s) installed in the hides just for photographers like you and me. Having said that, I only use flash in the open field 
The answer to your second question is yes and no. You can get away with mounting the flash unit with extender on the camera's hotshoe. If you're really serious about flash photography using flash arm would be the way to go. It provides all the flexibility you come to expect and proper clearence from the lens itself too.
