I think the one in the picture is a male. The roles of the sexes are reversed among Painted Snipes. It is the duller male who broods and looks after the young. The more colourful female holds the territory and will look for another mate after laying the eggs.
我想照片中的成鳥應該是隻雄鳥。彩鷸兩性間的角色互換，雄鳥羽色較暗，負責孵 蛋和育雛（「揍仔公」  ）；雌鳥羽色鮮艷，負責保衛領域，產卵後會再找其他異性配對（「花心[也母]」  ）。

A few years back, I was thinking about if it was possible to witness shorebirds breeding at Mai Po. So lucky that my dream finally did come true and hopefully we may have pairs of spoonbills (no matter they are black-faced or sandpiper!) in the near future there at Mai Po!
Appreciate Mai Po staff's hard work very much!! Keep it up!

【記者蔡傳威報道】父親節是表揚父愛的節日，人類如此，雀鳥亦然，而在雀鳥世 界中，父兼母職的彩鷸更能彰顯出父愛的偉大。雄性彩鷸跟其他雀鳥的分別是沒有 漂亮的外表，亦沒有雄偉的體形，但當牠一張開兩翼，就能盡展父愛的天性。自雌 鳥產卵後，雄性彩鷸便須默默擔起整頭家，由孵蛋到餵哺雛鳥，由教導牠們飛行到 覓食，名副其實是鳥類世界的「湊仔公」。
為吸引異性，並抵抗天敵來襲，自然界大部分雄性鳥類都擁有鮮豔的外表，不過凡 事總有例外，彩鷸雌鳥居然較雄鳥漂亮，而且擁有更大的體形。在彩鷸的世界中， 雌鳥交配和產卵後，便會「不負責任」地揚長而去，繼續去吸引其他雄鳥完成繁殖 的任務，留下外表暗啞的公鳥孵蛋哺雛，從此默默擔起單親家庭中父兼母職的角色 。
齊齊趴地避天敵
不知是否自小生於單親家庭的緣故，彩鷸雛鳥非常早熟，剛出生不久，就會隨爸爸 在濕地上及長滿草的沼澤上覓食。牠們主要以昆蟲、貝類、穀類為食糧，並有固定 的覓食領域。每當天敵靠近時，父鳥及雛鳥均會迅速趴於地面，靜止不動，藉其保 護色避過襲擊。
彩鷸在香港並不常見，香港觀鳥會水禽普查統籌員余日東表示，現時全港大約有五 十隻彩鷸，主要居於錦田、塱原及米埔一帶濕地，但由於不少淡水濕地正面臨發展 的壓力，數目不斷減少，若情況持續，彩鷸可能會遷離本港，故亟待保育。
