Interesting formation! But..it seems to me that the "Great Egrets" are too small......when compared to the Little Egrets next to them...

I think the birds in the photo are Cattle Egrets, of which there is usually heavy passage through HK during September. Mike Turnbull

On a quick second look I think three are either Great or Inter Egrets, the latter probably, this also being a migatn through HK esp. in Sept. Mike Turnbull

Thanks Mike and dominic!! I could see the cattle egrets now. That's why the "great egrets" are too small!! hahaha... However, how to distinguish inter from cattle egrets in flight?

I think it is a intermediate egret. Their necks are usually not a reliable factor.

Hope to share the three 'necks' with you... Great Egret: Long, often held straight such that it looks even longer than the body, and always thin. Intermdiate: Long, often thinner at the top half and quite thick at the bottom half when held straight, with the impression of 'full-chest' when seen from certain angles. Cattle: Always thick and short for a egret even when held straight. And wish this all helps a bit in the identification of these very angelical birds seen with such relative ease in Hong Kong that we should all take care to value their presence!

So..the BENT-S shape of the neck is not a distintive character for great egret...... Thanks Koel!
