Warbler 柳鶯 Mongkok 旺角 10/10/2004 Sorry for the poor quality since he jumps and jumps so fast in shadow. And I still not identify which type of Warbler he is. But I sure he is a wild bird http://photopower.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=120

You can clearly identify this common winter visitor from this photo. Your location is interesting - usually it is found in forests such as Tai Po Kau and Ng Tung Chai. It has a very short tail, pink feet and and a big supercilium - check out the photo guide and the Field guide - these features will be the most important ones to answer your question. Cheers Mike

| What a guess!! Though Mike has given a lot of hints, it is not correctly identified.

Let me guess, it is Asian Stubtail Warbler. 1.Very short tail. 2. Scally pattern on head. 3. Stand on floor. 4. Long pale pinkish legs

Thank for your kindly hints. I guess short-tailed bush warbler 鱗頭樹鶯. ? Last year, I saw similar bird in Kowloon chai park in Kowloon City and King's Park in Mongkok. Hope I will meet them there again.

Joe, For more hints, could you please describe the call (voice) of this bird? This is an important factor to identify warblers. My guess is that it is the same as the one I photographed last year

I don't think the two are the same. As the tail of the bird in your photo is longer than that in 祖葉's photo. I think 祖葉's one is Asian Stubtail Warbler but I can't identify Lynx's one. Can anyone tell me what it is and how to identify it? Thank you very much!!

I agreed with 路人甲, they are two different Warblers. I guess 祖葉's one is Short-tailed Bush Warbler and Lynx's one is Dusky Warbler. Can any one let us know the answer? Thanks a lot!

PL You are right. The first one is a Short-tailed Bush Warbler - two were in Ng Tung Chai this morning - th first time I have seen this species this autumn The second one is a Dusy Warbler. As you point out the tail is longer - this is the most obvious difference between these two species. Also, the supercilium of Dusky Warbler is not so strong in front of the eye as Short-tailed Bush Warbler. If you look carefully you will also see that the leg colour is not a pale on Dusky Warbler, and the bill is shorter. In the field you may also notice that the tome of plumage is different - STB warbler is a warm rich chestnut brown, while Dusky is a rather dull cold greyish brown. Such differences are small and need some practice. One other useful feature - habitat: Dusky is most often found in farmland or wetland areas, while STB is generally a forest-dwelling species. However this is only useful as a general guideline - on migration bth species may turn up in a variety of habitats - this morning I saw a Dusky about 25 metres away from where an STB was calling! (near the Man Duk Yuen Archway in Ng Tung Chai) The calls are also different, but I find it difficult to writethem in way which is helpful, so I will not comment on that. Cheers Mike
