Great shot.

BTW, are you the one I met (and talked to) shooting inside a hide near pond #22 (?) early morning yesterday ?  If positive, just say hi and pleased to meet you.

I think this is a juvenile Pied Harrier.  The relatively dark upperparts, very small white rump and strongly barred tail with a broad pale tip all favour this option.

Do you have photgraphs of the underparts?

Yes, this is a juvenile Pied Harrier.  In addition to the features I mentioned in my previous posting, you see the typical underwing pattern with the silvery (but black tipped) primaries strikingly paler than the rest of the underparts.  This is a rather dark individual (I actually saw the same bird at Mai Po last Friday), most juveniles are more richly coloured than bird.

Incidentally, I believe that Pied Harriers are much overlooked in autumn (September-October) when they can outnumber Eastern Marsh Harriers which are quite scarce in autumn (being more of a winter visitor than a passage migrant unlike Pied).  So far this autumn I have seen five different Pieds but only 2 or 3 different Eastern Marsh.
