Angus,

I love the detail you have in the feathers, the exposure must have been spot on, especially Photo #2

Angus,

Nice shots but #3 above stands out for me. Merging of the head/bill with the wing is not a big problem here ...

Perhaps just a tad over sharpened as I see halo around the subject on all the images.

Thanks for the comments!

Bob, I found that I often over-exposed my pictures when compared to the light meter readings kk did. Since I didn't go through the film era, I have always adopted the digital approach of exposing to the right (histogram). I am becoming more and more conscious to avoid over-exposing my images now. The diffuse sunlight on that morning also helped.

I was strucked by the feather details in these images since I didn't expect much when I pressed the shutter. Although they are heavily cropped, the details are still there. This is very different from other flight images I've taken in the past. I suspect it got to do with the very high shutter speeds I was using. All motions were frozen and hence the feather details! In the past, I tried to keep the ss to around 1/1000s to 1/2000s. I would lower the iso or stop down (to gain DOF) if I have spare ss to play with. I think I would like to experiment more with ultra high shutter speeds!

kk, I did become a bit more aggressive in terms of sharpening lately. I think either my CRT or my aging eyes had a problem. I didn't see much halo! Thanks for the reminder. I'll be more conversative in sharpening in the future.

Owen, thanks for confirming this. It still appeared quite "normal" to me after I put on my reading glasses. Must try again with another mon later. May be its time to replace my CRT...

Thanks MaC_siu_kit!

Angus,

I'm on CRT mon as well.
Let's be honest you konw I'm being picky here. The halo is very slight as I said earlier. Try selective sharpening and see if it makes any difference ...

Thanks for the explanation kk. For selective sharpening, do you use any special tools, macros, or just the history brush in PS?

Angus,

I think KK means use the marquee or lasso tool to make a selection and then apply the sharpening to only this selection. Don't sharpen the whole picture.

Thanks Bob for the heads up!

There are number of way making the selection, Angus!
Use Magnetic Lesso tool if bg is featured otherwise Magic Wand works wonder on plain bg.

Angus,

You may be able to feather the selection, so that you don't notice so much the change between sharpened and untouched areas
