Good eye contact and nice pano crop, Dan!
I see sharpening halo and wish there was more detail in its plumage; probably a result of hefty crop?! ...

I shall oversharpen the photo then.
 
This is around 70% full frame but crop the top and bottom to make it be panorama view.

Crop to show the head only below. The shot shall be underexposure and not sharp (not in focus) enough.

Thanks for showing a closeup crop!  
 
The eye/beak looks reasonably sharp but not the wing.  This could be caused by motion blur seeing that you're only at 1/1000s. With that kind of ss and focal length my experience tells that you need to pan with the flying bird precisely to achieve the sharpness necessary for enlargement ...
