I didn't see many Sanderlings on Thursday but this one stood out amongst the breeding Curlew Sandpipers. Neil MPNR, Hong Kong, China. 27/04/06 Olympus 7070wz plus Swarovski STS80HD scope and Sw 30x eyepiece and DCA adapter.

Could it be a juvenile judging from its upperpart feather with black centres and pale fringes. Furthermore, is it also a curlew sandpiper right at the centre of the photo standing in front of the Great Sand Plover? Its beak suggests so but the brownish feature on its head/nape contrasting from its upperpart looks different from the others.

It looks like another Curlew Sandpiper to me. It's amazing how many variations in color there is amongst them. Neil.
