International Black-faced Spoonbill Census 2004

Dear all,
The 2004 International Black-faced Spoonbill Census was conducted in 16-18 January 2004. The census has been fully supported by active birdwatchers and enthusiasm BFS conservationists. Most of the results are received and a total of 1186 Black-faced Spoonbills were recorded in the census so far that is also the highest number of this species. This known population has increased to about 11% from last year.
I apologized the results could not be announced earlier but the Chinese New Year had hindered the data collection and information exchange.
The preliminary result is listed below and the final report will be available in late March or early April this year.

數量創新高北韓發展成隱憂
【 明 報 專 訊 】 綽 號 「 小 黑 」 的 瀕 危 候 鳥 黑 臉 琵 鷺 ， 在 上 月 全 球 同 步 普 查 中 ， 數 目 再 創 新 高 ， 錄 得 共 1186 隻 ， 比 去 年 增 加 11 ％ 。 但 大 家 可 別 高 興 得 太 快 ， 因 為 各 地 沿 海 地 區 發 展 迅 速 ， 估 計 「 小 黑 」 都 擠 在 發 展 較 遲 緩 的 北 韓 繁 殖 ， 將 來 北 韓 「 迎 頭 趕 上 」 發 展 ， 「 小 黑 」 隨 時 難 以 立 足 。
根 據 全 球 雀 鳥 專 家 及 研 究 員 同 步 進 行 的 黑 臉 琵 鷺 普 查 ， 台 灣 依 然 是 「 小 黑 」 全 球 最 大 的 越 冬 地 ﹔ 香 港 穩 居 第 二 位 ， 今 年 在 香 港 錄 得 的 數 目 ， 更 比 去 年 上 升 33 ％ 達 238 隻 ﹔ 排 行 第 三 的 則 是 日 本 。

港黑臉琵鷺數字創新高
[本報訊] (記者 羅敬文) 根據最新全球普查結果顯示，極度瀕危的鳥類：黑臉琵鷺數目正穩定上升， 打破本港及全球歷年紀錄。至今，全球最少有1,186隻黑臉琵鷺，較去年上升11%， 在港度冬的黑臉琵鷺已佔全球種群總數約五分之一，達238隻，是全球第二大度冬� a。
是次全球黑臉琵鷺同步普查於今年一月中的連續3天進行，由香港觀鳥會負責統籌。普查結果顯示，全球最少有1,186隻黑臉琵鷺，較去年的1,069隻上升11%，打破歷年紀錄；黑臉琵鷺全球三大度冬地點包括台灣、香港米埔后海灣和日本，在這三地已錄得全球黑臉琵鷺已知數量的86%。
本港成黑臉琵鷺第二越冬地
在1982年，香港錄得的黑臉琵鷺數目約20隻，直至是次的普查，在米埔自然保護區 、落馬洲，尖鼻咀 (內后海灣)，以及流浮山至稔灣 (外后海灣)，已錄得238隻，較去年179隻多，並是歷年來最高數目。至於整個珠三 角洲在普查期間有多達293隻黑臉琵鷺，亦較去年246隻多16%。
香港觀鳥會黑臉琵鷺全球同步普查統籌余日東表示，自1998年起，全球已知的黑臉 琵鷺的數目已經連續第6年上升，相信是全球推行的保育措施的成效，令牠 們 繁 殖 成 功 ，並有賴各地資深觀鳥者、研究員合作，增加普查力度的成果。他強調，香港是黑 臉琵鷺全球第二大度冬地，反映香港在保育國際重要性瀕危物種上肩負重任。
面對米埔附近日漸增加發展的壓力，余日東擔心會影響黑臉琵鷺的棲息地。他指出 ：雖然普查數字仍有上升，但米埔鄰近發展所造成的人為污染和干擾，會對黑臉琵 鷺造成影響，建議政府繼續加強米埔及附近地區的保育環境工作。
